As Apelles Mumbi finishes her placement year in Exacaform and returns to Coventry University to complete her final year in Aerospace Systems Engineering, she shares her experiences, future plans, and the lessons she learned during her time with us. Described by her team as ‘eager to learn’, ‘quick to pick up new procedures’, and ‘always bringing in positive vibes’, Apelles has made a lasting impression.
Operations Director Ricki Nagra states ‘Apelles Mumbi has been a wonderful intern, from her first day no task has been too much for her and more importantly the way that she applies herself to completing the tasks in a timely manner. I have every faith that Apelles will exceed expectations in her chosen career and will be a wonderful asset to any team she joins.’
I was a Support Engineering Intern. I supported the business and most departments from production to progress chasing. Furthermore, I assisted the senior leadership team in data analysis, recruitment, and finding the right people for the right positions.
Every day was different but most days I was on the shop floor helping with production. I would be in the quality department assisting with laser marking, inspecting countersinks for retips and relaps, and issuing materials for different work orders to commence production. I was also involved with the production control team and attended a daily meeting to plan the manufacturing output for the day.
One of the key projects was the Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE). This involved collecting data from the shop floor and analysing it to calculate the performance, speed, and quality of production, with the aim of improving product efficiency and effectiveness.
I have gained a lot of technical skills. For example, I can now interpret technical drawings and have developed knowledge of PCD cutting tools and their applications. I have also specialised in countersinks; I can now visually inspect them for quality assurance and defects. Beyond technical skills, I have learned about B2B operations and improved my ability to interact with people from other departments.
Yes, definitely. Coming out of university, I thought that as an Aerospace Engineer, I would be working on aircraft or aircraft components (like engines). However, my time at Exactaform has opened my mind to new opportunities - Exactaform is a cutting tool company but is still an aerospace company.
I received a lot of mentorship and advice from my supervisor and Operations Director, Ricki Nagra, and the Managing Director, Jamie White.
I’d say, have an open mind. There’s a lot to learn. Don’t be scared to ask questions and interact with the directors because they have a very open communication style. Follow instructions, ask if unsure, and communicate.
I feel like it has helped me discover myself more. I’ve been able to identify my weaknesses and strengths. Learning more about John Inglis and the history of Exactaform, I understand that hard work, discipline, and determination can help you achieve your goals.
I’d say Ricki Nagra because of his vast knowledge and experience. Just observing how he does things, his relations with his juniors and seniors, and his problem-solving abilities. He is very ethical and supports career progression.
